Smart is seriously considering a new SUV based on its new rear-engine platform to boost sales.
The revelation that Smart that’s no longer sold in Australia was made in British car magazine, Autocar.
Despite strong sales, Renault sold 10,000 Twingos in February alone - Smart 3700 ForTwos/ForFours, both car-makers are keen to increase total output at the Renault-owned factory in Solvenia.
According to Autocar, both Smart and Renault has identified city-car-sized crossovers as the next emerging trend. That’s why, if approved, the Smart SUV being considered is thought to only be fractionally longer than the current ForFour that’s 3.75m long. The SUV considered will also retain the ForFour’s tight turning circle and 2.2m-long load length.
Prices for the small crossover is expected to, in Europe, start from around $22,500.
If green lit for production the baby Smart SUV and Renault clone could be on sale by early 2018.
