SPY PICS: 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee could be a seven-seater

Spy photographers in the US have snapped images of what appear to be the next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Jeep has already confirmed plans to introduce a seven-seat family-friendly SUV that’s set to be larger than the current Grand Cherokee yet smaller than the rumoured Grand Wagoneer - and that’s what we reckon the camouflaged mule in these photos is.

The images reveal a longer wheelbase as well as extra overhang at the rear end. Jeep’s classic design is easily distinguishable even with the additional cladding, though just how much the new car’s design deviates from the current model first introduced in 2011 remains to be seen.

Earlier this year, Jeep boss Mike Manley announced the brand would introduce two more products to its portfolio, one being the large Grand Wagoneer and the second being the three row Grand Cherokee which Manley says will technically play in the same segment as the current model.

“Roughly 60 per cent of that segment is three row, so Grand Cherokee has really only played in 40 per cent. That will open up that part of the segment for us,” he said.

And, although not officially confirmed, sources say the next-generation Grand Cherokee will likely utilise a modified version of the same platform used in the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Giulia, with talks of it using a mild-hybrid from launch and even fully electric variant later on.

Jeep is yet to confirm timing or further specification on the next-generation Grand Cherokee, but a market launch of 2020 or 2021 is anticipated.
