SPY PICS: 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG seen in the wild

Battery-electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class 4x4 off-roader draws close to production

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG has been spotted winter testing in the frozen north wearing near-production finishing touches like bespoke aero alloy wheels, bumpers, wheel-arch flares and side steps.

Some camouflaged elements can still be found tacked onto the body, most notably the front fascia in a bid to mask the EQG’s grille design which is widely anticipated to take on an enclosed and more integrated look than internal combustion versions.

The enclosed front-end is paired to a slimmer and marginally more aerodynamic bumper compared to the savage Mercedes-AMG G 63, which should not only help extend the EV’s driving range but improve ground clearance and the off-road approach angle too.

A silver skid plate can be seen under the lip of the bumper, marking the EQG’s hard-core off-road intentions which should be no less rugged than the ICE models.

There’s little difference at the rear-end, with only minor exterior trim changes and a mild redesign of the numberplate cut-out, while the flared wheel-arches also carry subtle modifications.

Of course, there’s no exhaust outlets on the battery-electric model, which also rides on unique 20-inch black alloy wheels shod with 275/50-profile Falken tyres.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG is expected to be offered in at least two model grades from launch – 560 and 580 – with power from up to four electric motors, allowing each driving wheel to operate independently.

That will gift the EQG the ability to pivot on the spot within its own length, aiding manoeuvrability in tight situations off-road.

There’s still no word yet on the electric off-roader’s outputs, performance or battery capacity, but overseas reports point to a 100kWh battery pack as per the higher-grade Mercedes-Benz EQS models.

For reference, the EQS 580 features a 107.8kWh battery.
