A prototype 2026 Mitsubishi Pajero has been spotted testing in country Victoria, with images of the new full-sized SUV being published to social media over the weekend.

Noticeably wider and more bulbous than the retiring Pajero Sport it will replace, there’s a certain degree of Nissan Patrol in the new Pajero’s design – in these images at least – and yet it’s been widely reported the underpinnings and powertrain will be pinched from the Triton ute.
Such a move would be the most logical and cost-effective solution, ensuring the Pajero stays firmly in the thick of the off-road large SUV action against the Ford Everest, Toyota Prado and Isuzu MU-X rather the moving upmarket against the Patrol and LandCruiser.
In keeping with that theme, the body is much squarer and macho than the rounded Sport with a higher belt line, flatter tailgate and significantly wider tracks.
The accompanying Mitsubishi staff were quick to mask the camouflaged development vehicle with a car cover once they noticed photos were being taken.
We don’t have any images of the front this time round, but teasers have shown it to resemble the smaller and ASEAN-aimed Mitsubishi Destinator.

With Australia being such a pivotal market for Mitsubishi, especially in the off-road scene, it’s hardly surprising the new Pajero has been spotted out and about, given dozens of brands use our country for hot-weather and durability testing.
With the best part of a year until it’s tipped to go into production (reportedly December), and healthy Pajero Sport inventory, Mitsubishi Australia has plenty of time to localise its “flagship SUV product” and give it the best chance at rivalling the Everest and Prado when it arrives in early 2027.
