The car (or cars) under the shrouds will debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September, but the identity of the vehicles? Audi is teasing and tight-lipped all at once.
As YouTube commenters have already noted, both cars presented are long and large, but the punters are yet to reach consensus as to whether either or both are the A9, or the facelifted A8 shown in these pictures, courtesy of the spy photographers at Automedia. The A9 seems the likelier of the two for an appearance at Frankfurt, since it's (over)due by then, whereas Automedia has this A8 pegged for a 2014 launch as a 2015 model. That indicates the facelifted A8 won't be ready for market until the second half of 2014, with possibly a global reveal in Detroit or Geneva during the first half of the year.
It's potentially a long wait for a car that won't be far removed from the current model, Automedia suggests. The spy photographers suggest that external changes will be limited to "subtle tweaks to the lights, grille and bumpers." Audi has previously revealed that the next A8 will get full LED headlights, just like the latest Mercedes S-Class. This far out Automedia's not placing any bets concerning the A8's drivetrain range, but anticipates TFSI engines in 3.0 and 4.0-litre capacities, the 6.3-litre W12 and 3.0-litre TDI V6 will continue without major change. Other than the diesel V6, the rest is of little concern for Aussie buyers.
There is bound to be a refresh in the cabin, Automedia says, describing the interior updates as 'subtle' and possibly (probably?) encompassing a restyled instrument cluster, some new technology for internet connectivity and a modular infotainment system.
