Subtle is not a word that sits easily with Audi’s massive Q7 SUV. But the subtle changes identified in these Carparazzi spy pics of an undisguised test mule submitting to some cold weather testing aren’t showing an awful lot about the next generation model.
Other than a reworked front bumper with gargantuan side air intakes and different (LED?) headlights there’s not a lot to indicate changes to the base substance of Audi’s headline SUV. The back end, apart from minor re-shaping at the bottom of the bumper and different taillight lenses looks no different in essence to the current Q7.
Which leads us to question: “Is this is maybe a new Q7 clad in current-model body panels?”
What is more important lies under the skin though, as it is general knowledge that Audi is committed to a weight-saving programme for the Q7 following a similar path to that already trodden by the shared-platform Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne. Word is the Audi could lose as much as 400kg – a massive weight reduction – through extensive use of aluminium. Some reports suggest the lightweight metal could be used for the body panels.
It is expected the next Q7 will follow the common route today of using smaller petrol and diesel turbo engines to reduce weight, emissions and fuel consumption. A hybrid version of the big SUV is rumoured too.
The new Audi Q7 is expected to launch during 2013.
