SPY PICS: Bigger, lighter BMW X3 on the way

BMW is expected to launch its third-generation X3 SUV late in 2016 and these Automedia spy photos of a prototype undergoing winter testing indicate the new model's development is well on track.

To be based on the same platform making its first appearance under the new 7 Series and eventually underpinping a broad range of the Bavarian company's cars from 3 Series onwards, the next X3 will be bigger, lighter (around 90kg) and stiffer than the current vehicle.

The Automedia photos show the X3 will feature a similar styling signature to the current car, but
with upswept headlights and an increased emphasis on the horizontal rather than the vertical in the frontal graphics.

The heavy camouflage makes it difficult to judge, but it appears the side windows will adopt a more flowing lower sill line with a rounded profile at the D pillar, while the sweeping side strake will be set lower on the door line, once again taking the emphasis away from the vertical and in favour of the horizontal.

Prying into what lies underneath the disguise taping and dummy stick-on tail lights is equally as tricky, but it appears the next X3 will get a wider, more uniformly shaped tailgate, as well as a deeper, larger rear window.

Inside, it is rumoured the X3 will benefit from slimmer, lighter seats to take full advantage of the increased cabin space, as well as a more cargo-friendly folding arrangement and an optional oversize sunroof.

Powertrains are expected to include a new four-cylinder diesel, as well as a new variant powered by a 250kW version of BMW's 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol engine. There's even been mention of a fully-fledged X3 M flaunting a 336kW version of the twin-turbo 3.0-litre six-cylinder that drives the current M3 and M4 BMWs.

To fully flesh out the powertrain options, a plug-in hybrid with a fully-electric 50km capability is also a likelihood for the next X3. This powertrain is said to combine a 180kW 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine with a 67kW electric motor.

The third generation BMW X3 is expected to go on sale in Europe late in 2016 as a 2017 model year vehicle.
