SPY PICS: BMW 1 Series GT and CAT

Two cars built on the same platform, but one will seat five, the other seven
BMW plans to present its front-wheel drive five-seat hatch at the Geneva motor show early next year.
For the moment the car is being described by the spy photographers at Automedia as the 1 Series GT, although BMW has previously sworn on a stack of bibles it won't be named that at all. The five-seater, which is how we'll refer to it henceforth, will be based on BMW's new UKL platform, to be shared with MINI.
The other car shown here is the pre-production version of the Compact Activity Tourer (CAT) concept shown in Paris last year. As we reported previously too, the CAT has been referred to by a local BMW executive as the '2 Series Activity Tourer'. Capable of seating seven it looks much like the other car, although closer scrutiny reveals there is less in common between the two than first glance suggests.
Leaving aside the increasingly convoluted morass that passes for BMW nomenclature, the five-seater is clearly shorter in the wheelbase than the CAT. The longer rear door of the CAT (reg M DJ 6843) is plainly in evidence in these pictures. And the rear three-quarter view shows the reflection of sunlight across a masked-up kidney window (completed with Hofmeister kink) in the D pillar.
The window frames of the five-seater's rear doors are slightly raked, whereas the counterparts for the CAT are closer to upright, to facilitate entry to a third row of seats. Based on what can be determined through the paisley camo, the two cars may be quite different in overall style. Flame surfacing we see in the flanks of the CAT isn't apparent in the five-seater.
According to Automedia, the production CAT will not be unveiled until late next year or early 2015. It's believed the two cars will share drivetrain components, including all-wheel drive systems. Furthermore, says Automedia, other variants built on the same UKL platform will follow. These will include FAST (Family Activity Sports Tourer), JOY and MINI MAT.
FAST will be a soft-road SUV positioned at a price point below the X1 in the SUV range. JOY will be a 1 Series (front-driven) coupe, and MINI MAT (Multi Activity transporter) will be a people mover based loosely on the FAST.
