SPY PICS: BMW's next 5 Series on show

Latest shots of tech-advanced Beemer... is it a plug-in hybrid?

Our recent spy video provided a closer look at the next-generation BMW 5 Series than the spy pics we published nearly two years ago. But since the spy video, new photos have emerged of the upcoming model, due next year, in what appears to be plug-in hybrid guise.

No doubt taking a design lead from the striking Pininfarina-designed Gran Lusso concept, the next 5 Series will follow in the new 7 Series' footsteps (due in October) by employing extensive CFRP material in its production processes.

In addition to the structure, it is believed items such as the roof, bonnet, boot lid and door skins will be constructed in CFRP, significantly reducing overall weight when compared to the ageing current vehicle, last refreshed in mid-2013 but on-sale in Australia since 2010.

Like before, the 5 Series architecture will be shared within the group (including 6 Series) and several body styles are expected.

Continued rumours suggest that the next 5 Series will also be an efficiency leader. The additional left-front wing filler cap shown in these images is believed to be hiding an electrical socket for a plug-in hybrid system, as per the label on the rear bumper.

It is also suggested that a new three-cylinder turbocharged diesel will be available as another economical option. Meanwhile the hot-shot M5 could offer a choice of rear- and all-wheel drive for the first time.
