SPY PICS: BMW's next 7 Series

Another slew of spy shots have surfaced showing off BMW's answer to the new S-Class, the redesigned 7 Series

Caught testing here is BMW’s response to the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, a fully redesigned 7 Series limousine that will ride on an all-new platform incorporating lessons learned from the carbonfibre-based i3 and i8.

Expected to appear by late 2015 before going on sale in 2016, the next-generation 7 Series presents very similar lines and proportions to the existing 7 Series but has a much sportier demeanour thanks to a more pronounced wedge shape, shorter boot, more sloping bonnet, ‘faster’ grille and larger exhaust outlets.

Although short- and long-wheelbase versions will again be offered, BMW is set to radically change the way in which it builds all upcoming cars. Leveraging the technology and production techniques it pioneered with the electrified i3 and the electrified i8, the new 7 Series will benefit from more use of carbon-fibre and composite components.

Alongside conventional steel and aluminium, expect the new Seven to come with a carbon-fibre boot, bonnet and even roof.

While the result will be a full-size limousine that accelerates, stops and corners better than before, the new BMW 7 Series is also expected to pioneer a host of new car technologies gained from a partnership with Continental.

This should include some sort of automated driving system that goes beyond low-speed crash avoidance technology, as well as self-parking, full WiFi capability, downloadable apps, 3D maps with real-time traffic and weather updates and increased voice activation functionality, plus new in-car connectivity developed with Harman.

Expect to see the new 7Series roll out with various engine options as well, ranging from an entry-level six-cylinder turbo-diesel to an all-conquering V12 turbo flagship (despite reports to the contrary.

A replacement for the petrol-electric ActiveHybrid 7 is also due, but is expected to add plug-in capability -- possibly developed with technology borrowed from Toyota.
