SPY PICS: Cupra Tavascan spotted for the first time

Cupra’s second EV will be a coupe-esque SUV based on the upcoming Volkswagen ID.5 GTX

The 2024 Cupra Tavascan has already been partially revealed to the world via a collective promo image of the Spanish performance brand’s three upcoming EVs due for release in the coming years, and now a heavily camouflaged prototype of the sporty mid-size electric SUV has been spotted testing.

Because the battery-powered coupe-style SUV hasn’t made its own standalone debut yet, there are aspects of its design and perhaps more importantly its specification that Cupra isn’t ready to reveal just yet.

The prototype spied here was spotted in northern Sweden and marks the first time we’ve seen the Tavascan in the metal, but given how revealing the promo images were there’s not actually a whole heap more to unpack here save for the rear-end.

Compared to the previously seen Tavascan concept, the production version has a stouter rump with a more definitive end to the tailgate, something accentuated by the integrated lip spoiler.

Rear headroom doesn’t look as if it will be impacted too much compared to a traditional five-door shape; something that’ll probably please style-conscious buyers with tall kids, relatives or friends.

Underneath the sleek but high-riding body is the same MEB architecture that’s under the similarly swoopy Volkswagen ID.5 and Skoda Enyaq iV, and it’s the hot GTX version of the former that’s rumoured to lend the new Cupra Tavascan its higher-output dual-motor powertrain.

Odds are some software will be tweaked for a bit of variation between the two models, but outputs of around 225kW/460Nm would be firmly in the ballpark of the Tavascan’s VW sister model, as will a circa-450km effective driving range courtesy of a 77kWh battery pack.

carsales has previously reported 150kW single-motor versions will likely emerge further down the line, yielding a longer circa-500km driving range.

The Tavascan is due to arrive in Australia sometime in 2025, following the model’s late 2024 launch in Europe.
