Dubbed the Fiat 500X and Jeep Junior, the pictures show a prototype development test mule being run on icy roads. Being little more than the Fiat 500L with increased ride height, the final production model should be very close in size. And expect the frontal styling treatment to be very similar too. Built upon a modified version of Fiat’s “Small Wide” platform, the same platform that forms the underpinnings of the Alfa Romeo MiTo, the new SUV is expected to arrive with the same engine options as the Fiat 500L, a choice between the 0.9-litre TwinAir turbo, 1.4-litre Multi-Air Turbo and the 1.6-litre MultiJet II turbo-diesel. Fiat Chrysler Group Australia has previously confirmed to motoring.com.au that any future four-wheel drive Fiats will likely be badged as Jeeps when they arrive down under. But we shouldn’t rule out the prospect of seeing the Fiat 500X here in Oz – badged as a Fiat.
Details have been scarce about the upcoming baby SUV but production is expected to begin in late 2014.
