SPY PICS: Ford plots a new small SUV

A prototype replacement for Ford’s slow-selling EcoSport SUV has been caught testing in Germany

Ford’s mini EcoSport SUV is in line for replacement and, like the perky five-door crossover that was launched locally in 2013, it’s likely to be also based on the Fiesta hatch.

The test mule recently spotted testing in Germany appears more than ever like a jacked-up light-class hatchback and is notable, when compared with the EcoSport, for the lack of a spare wheel hanging off the tailgate.

Its positioning within the Ford line-up would appear to indicate the as yet un-named SUV (although City-SUV has been mooted as a possibility) aims to appeal stylistically to those contemplating the step up from a regular light hatch like the Fiesta.

It also appears to fit above the minimally-macho Active version of the Fiesta, which is not sold in Australia, and basically defines its existence as being a regular light hatch on tippy-toes.

The new small Ford SUV will go head-to-head with the likes of Mitsubishi’s top-selling ASX, Mazda CX-3 and Nissan QASHQAI in the small SUV segment where the EcoSport has been a minimal presence.

Like the EcoSport as sold in Australia, the new small; Ford SUV is like to be front-drive only, with the choice of either a 90kW/150Nm 1.5-litre or a 92kW/170Nm turbo 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine driving through a conventional six-speed automatic transmission.

It’s speculated that the new mini Ford SUV will launch in Europe in 2020, with Australia not too far behind.
