SPY PICS: Hyundai freshens Genesis coupe

With the Australian launch of the next generation model still four years off, Hyundai's Genesis coupe gets its first facelift

Hyundai is about to introduce an update of its swish Genesis 2+2 coupe, a move that isn't calculated to whet local appetites for the rear-drive sporty, but likely will do anyway.

The impressive Korean coupe, which comes in four-cylinder, V6 and V8 form, will be the recipient of Hyundai’s new, normally aspirated 319kW 5.0-litre Tau V8.

Although it produces more power and better performance, the direct injection V8 is claimed to be two per cent more economical than the previous 4.6-litre version. Hyundai is also claiming improved handling for the Genesis coupe as well.

The cosmetic refurbishing of the coupe, which was introduced to overseas markets in 2009, focuses largely on the front end. The disguise cladding makes any definitive comment impossible, but the Carparazzi team says the Hyundai gets new headlights and fog lights, a new grille and lower air intake. Carparazzi also reckons there’s a new pair of tail lights.

Hyundai has said the next generation of its coupe is scheduled for an Australian launch in 2015, but the sedan version (it also gets a facelift) of the Genesis which, like the coupe so far, is built only in left hand drive, appears to be stuck in the too-hard box.

Hyundai sees the Genesis coupe as being a competitor for cars like the Infiniti G37 coupe, which will form part of the Nissan-owned luxury brand’s reappearance on the Australian market in late 2012.

It’s still some time away, but that should present an interesting puzzle for Hyundai’s pricing strategists.
