As the first SUV to join the Fiat 500 family, the 500X is probably the most important Fiat since it reincarnated the 500 in 2007.
Fiat's first 'proper' crossover will allow the quirky Italian brand to ride the global SUV wave for the first time when it goes on sale in Europe following its world debut at the Paris motor show in October -- and in Australia in early 2016.
The 500X has been spotted in testing before, and bodyshells of the all-new Fiat SUV have also been seen in official pictures on the production line in Italy.
But now spy snappers in Italy have captured its interior for the first time (as well as its five-door exterior with less camouflage), confirming its platform won't be the only significant difference from the rest of the 500 micro-car family.
The 500X is based on the same chassis architecture as the Fiat 500L people-mover and Jeep Renegade, which is also expected to become Jeep's biggest selling model when it arrives here in about 18 months.
As you also can seen from these more revealing exterior images, the 500X bears little resemblance to the either the 500 hatch, the 500L five-seater or the 500L Living seven-seat, let alone the Renegade.
And only the rounded headlights and tail-lights suggest it's vaguely related to the original Cinquecento.
Expect both the 500X and Renegade to be priced from under $25,000 here, in line with small SUV rivals like the Holden Trax, Ford EcoSport, Nissan JUKE, Mitsubishi ASX, Skoda Yeti and Peugeot 2008.
