More spy images the 2023 Maserati GranTurismo Folgore have emerged out of Europe, this time showing the all-electric grand tourer quietly pumping out laps of the Nurburgring as its global debut inches closer.
A busy new ‘Maserati GranTurismo’ camouflage design leaves very little to report in terms of the big Italian coupe’s design since Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares drove an electric blue prototype into the middle of Rome back in April for the local Formula E-Prix.
What we do have though are some fresh comments from brand executives confirming the intense performance testing regime.
“The new Maserati GranTurismo will be the brand’s first car to adopt a 100 per cent electric solution,” said Maserati.
“Ahead of the launch of the new model, the prototype cars are currently undergoing a period of intensive road and circuit testing, in various conditions of use, to acquire vital data for the preparation of the final set-up.”
A transponder can clearly be seen on the front of the Foglore prototype snapped in this latest batch of spy images as not one but two Maserati test pilots rocket around the Green Hell, with some sort of display or interface suction cupped to the inside of the windscreen in front of the co-pilot.
The meter is likely to be connected to the front-mounted transponder and perhaps the car itself so the co-pilot can view, monitor and alter vehicle parameters on the fly.
Details of the Foglore’s all-electric powertrain are still being kept a closely guarded secret, but we do know it will generate a “distinctive signature sound” that’s unlikely to emulate its V8-powered GranTurismo and GranCabrio predecessors.
“Customers will therefore benefit from 100 per cent electric propulsion vehicles that will combine driving pleasure, comfort and performance with a unique and unmistakable sound,” executives said back in 2020.
Despite being one of the smaller players within the luxury sports car and grand tourer segments, Maserati will be the first manufacturer to offer a traditionally styled, high-end battery-electric coupe and cabriolet as most other brands fluff about with electric SUVs, crossovers and ‘fastback’ sedans.
With the trident brand now in the final stages of the new GranTurismo’s development, it would be reasonable to expect the global debut to take place in the final quarter of the year, if not the early stages of 2023.
