SPY PICS: Mercedes-AMG G-Class 4x4² almost ready

Fire-breathing ‘63’ nameplate looks like being applied to Merc’s most hard-core off-roader

The Mercedes-Benz and AMG winter testing frenzy continues apace and a largely camo-free Mercedes-AMG G-Class 4x4² is the latest new model to be captured by our spy photographers undergoing cold-weather development testing in Sweden.

The new-gen hero off-roader was spotted for the first time back in August ahead of what was anticipated to be a Munich motor show debut last September, but alas such a reveal didn’t eventuate.

This vehicle’s identity as the flagship ‘63’ is given away partly by its two-tone front fascia, but also by its twin side-exit exhaust outlets, which can clearly be seen poking out from beneath the right rear door.

Positioned between the regular G-Class and the 6x6 behemoth of 2013, the G-Class 4x4² looks set to retain pretty much all of the hard-core off-road apparel of the regular 4x4² but backed by AMG’s monstrous twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 making up to 450kW/850Nm.

According to our snappers, this vibrant orange test vehicle was being punted up and down a snowy hillclimb fitted with an arsenal of adventure-ready accessories, including roof racks, a roof-access ladder and full-size spare wheel.

The tyres fitted to said spare don’t look to be particularly aggressively treaded and are devoid of any branding or profile data, further increasing the likelihood of this being the flagship AMG G 63 4x4².

A similar vehicle was also spotted pumping out laps of the Nurburgring back in November 2020, wearing all of the same accessories, body trims and camouflaged wheel-arches, roof cover and spare wheel holder.

Given the lack of camo and the presence of what’s sure to be a factory colour on this most recently snapped vehicle, we’d hazard a guess that an official reveal and subsequent market launch isn’t too far away, more than likely before the end of this year.
