Mercedes-Benz is pursuing a tough, brawny look for the new GLE SUV currently under development.
These spy photos of a tightly-wrapped, German-registered test mule indicate the next GLE – expected to be dubbed W167 – will face the world with a brazen front-end and accent its muscles via meaty wheel-arches, big wheels, chunky all-purpose tyres and a noticeable bulge for the door panels.
But the glasshouse remains a mystery. Will the GLE continue with the wraparound rear glass of the current model, or revert to a more conventional treatment for the meeting of the side and tailgate windows at the D-pillar?
Other than rumours the GLE will acquire a more rounded upper side window line, it’s difficult to say.
Compared to the current model, it appears the tail-lights have been lifted and moved to a more outboard position.
Word is the new GLE will use a wider and longer version of Benz’s new MHA platform, used for the current GLC model, to provide the required interior space and on-road presence.
Although the twin tailpipes look a bit puny, it’s thought the car pictured, with its pushed-out wheel-arches, big wheels and wide rubber, is an AMG 63 variant.
Although we don’t see it here, the GLE cabin is likely to boast a lot of the style and functionality unveiled with the all-new E-Class range, including dual screens and the familiarly ergonomic presentation of the console-mounted COMAND system controls.
This far out from launch, powertrains are the subject to speculation. Nevertheless, it’s reasonable to expect developments of the existing four, six and eight-cylinder engines, including a diesel and a plug-in hybrid. All-wheel drive is a given, as is the Mercedes nine-speed auto transmission.
Tipped to be introduced to European markets in 2018 as a 2019 model, the regular GLE will be again quickly followed by a slicker coupe version.
