SPY PICS: Mercedes S-class Cabrio
Three-pointed star is in the final stages of honing its gargantuan flagship convertibleWe've already sampled Mercedes-Benz's S-Class Coupe, and now set to follow in its wheeltracks is a ragtop version, spied here by the Automedia lenses on rain-soaked roads.
Although clothed from head to toe in funky camouflage, it's possible to glean that this prototype borrows more than a few styling elements first seen in the Ocean Drive concept revealed way back in 2007.
However, unlike the four-door Ocean Drive, the production S-Class Cabrio will adhere to a more conventional two-door format.
As per the smaller E-Class Cabrio, the upcoming flagship convertible will feature a canvas roof, rather than a folding hardtop, and this is likely to be partly to save weight and partly to maintain design purity (as having a folding metal lid would have necessitated an unsightly elongated boot).
Although completely wrapped in camo, it's possible to make out the S-Class Cabrio features the same face and rump as the Coupe we first sampled a couple of months ago.
The only discernible difference is that the roofline isn't quite as sleek and rakish as that of the fixed-head variant. That said, the S-Class Cabrio manages to dodge the frumpiness that distinguishes many large soft-tops.
Mechanically, the ragtop will be all but identical to its Coupe sibling, and the line-up is likely to kick off with the S500, propelled by a grunty 335kW/700Nm 4.7-litre twin-turbo V8.
Of course, it won't end there, as also in the pipeline are AMG-tuned S63 and S65 variants that will offer more poke, as well as a beefier stance.
The launch of the Cabrio will round off the S-Class range, which already includes sedan and coupe models, as well as an extended-wheelbase variant (due to resurrect the Maybach badge as a Mercedes sub-brand), and the recently revealed Pullman limousine.
There's still a wait in store for the big luxo convertible though as – given that the Coupe won't be hitting Australian showrooms until early 2015 – the Cabriolet isn't likely to land here until late next year.
