SPY PICS: Mercedes S-Class Coupe

Three-pointed star is busily honing a two-door version of its all-new tech-laden W222 S-Class limo
Mercedes-Benz’s new S-Class has already been revealed, but now undergoing development is the two-door spin-off that will replace the CL when it launches in late 2014.
These Automedia images reveal a camouflaged prototype that appears fairly close to the finished article, which will be known as the S-Class Coupe (rather than wearing CL badges, as is the case currently).
Although the funky camouflage conceals much of the detailing, it’s possible to make out the broad-shouldered stance of the coupe, which looks far more athletic than the vehicle it replaces.
Helping differentiate it from the four-door S-Class, the coupe has slimmer headlights and a lower bonnet line, endowing it with a much sleeker face than the stately sedan.
The roof is almost a chop-top affair, with gun-turret-style side windows adding to the car’s visual presence (if not visibility from within the cabin).
Also in the pipeline is a drop-top version, which will reportedly be conceived to recapture the essence of the classic 1970s 280SE 3.5 cabriolet, which combined style with a high level of luxury (for its era).
Getting back to the S-Class Coupe, expect it to feature the same comprehensive array of safety tech and driver aids as the four-door (which we’ll get to sample over the coming weeks).
The engine line-up will comprise V8 and V12 powerplants, with the entry-level S500 packing a twin-turbo 4.8-litre V8 with 325kW, while the S600’s snout will be stuffed with a blown 406kW 6.0-litre V12.
Naturally, there will also be high-po AMG S63 and S65 versions, and these will sport a 405kW 5.5-litre V8 and a 470kW version of the V12 respectively.
The AMG cars will be easy to differentiate from their more sedate siblings, as they will sport a wider lower air intake, 21-inch rims, beefier wheel arches, a DTM-inspired rear diffuser and, of course, the trademark quartet of chrome-tipped tail-pipes.
Mercedes is believed to be pitching the S-Class Coupe squarely at the Bentley Continental GT (which costs up to $450k in Speed form), so expect an increment in pricing to reflect its push upmarket.
