The dance of the seven (paisley) veils continues to unfold, as BMW exposes more of its upcoming 3 Series GT in the final stages of development.
Check out last November’s set of Carparazzi photos of the hatchback version of the 3 Series sedan and wagon and you will notice the gradual peeling-away of cladding on bonnet, doors and hatchback that gives us a more meaningful look at a variant BMW hopes will add significant volume to 3 Series sales. That said, there does seem little doubt that it will pinch a few customers from both sedan and Touring wagon variants and maybe the odd X3, which is not to say the X3 is odd – not anymore at least. Some customers might like the idea of five-door practicality, but not the high-riding stature that comes with most SUVs.
The gradual 3 Series GT strip show still doesn’t give away too much detail of the all-important rear side window Hofmeister kink, although it would be difficult to imagine a 3 Series without it.
Otherwise the story is as before: The GT shows how much BMW is multi-tasking its model range: From the window line down, the GT will be all 3 Series sedan, with the likelihood that the powerplant options available with the four-door will largely be duplicated in this more versatile hatchback.
