SPY PICS: New Chevrolet Corvette two weeks away

All-new American supercar spotted lapping the Nurburgring again on the eve of its world debut

We’ve seen and heard plenty about the all-new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette in the lead up to its global premiere on July 18.

And it’s not the first time we’ve seen spy shots of the bow-tie brand’s hotly anticipated all-American mid-engined supercar wrapped in camouflage in both Europe and the US.

But here’s one last look at the eighth-generation (C8) Corvette, which is expected to be the first global version, pounding the pavement at Germany’s most famous racetrack exactly two weeks before its world debut.

Once again sporting the date of its reveal along its flanks, this pre-production prototype is likely to be the entry-level 6.2-litre V8-powered Stingray variant that will be available from launch globally next year – including in Australia, for which GM has promised a “rear-drive V8 sports car” by 2020.

According to our spy photographers, this C8 Corvette sounded similar to the V8 Camaro SS, with no sign of supercharging or turbocharging, so we assume it was powered by same heavily updated naturally-aspirated 6.2-litre V8 that GM has already revealed the glorious sound of in a teaser video.

As we’ve reported, expect the new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray to offer Ferrari levels of performance with a circa-370kW V8, which will be followed by the twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8-powered ZR1.

Later on, a flagship Zora model is expected to combine the ZR1’s engine with an electric motor to produce in excess of 740kW of power in a plug-in hybrid version.

A manual transmission is not likely. Instead, when the new Chevrolet Corvette is released in the US early next year, all models are expected to come with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
