Just weeks after our spy photographers in Europe caught the new-generation Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe testing in Stuttgart, the first shots of the forthcoming high-performance AMG variants have now emerged.
Also shot in Mercedes-Benz heartland of Stuttgart, the camouflaged engineering development car seen here is suggested to be the incoming 2023 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 Coupe.
However, it could also be the AMG-fettled GLC 43 Coupe version that’s likely to arrive before the AMG 63 follows a little further down the track, mirroring a rollout that’s underway with the related new Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the regular Mercedes-Benz GLC wagon that’s due to arrive here in the first half of next year.
In any case, there’s no denying the development car’s identity as an AMG variant with its wider and lower stance, more aggressive bumpers, unique grille finish, chunky rear diffuser, bigger rear spoiler, high-performance brake package and rhomboid quad exhausts.
The AMG 43 and 63 models are both downsizing to a smaller-displacement electrified 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol powertrain for this new second-generation coupe-style version of Mercedes-Benz’s best-selling SUV.
As found on the new C-Class, the C 43 offers 300kW/500Nm with the aid of a 48V mild-hybrid system.
The AMG 63 will up the ante with a plug-in hybrid system grafted onto the M139 engine that in top-spec form should develop more than 500kW.
All-wheel drive will be standard, and a raft of chassis improvements and technology upgrades will be applied as we’ve already seen with C 43.
While the new GLC wagon has been shown and is locked in for an Australian launch in the first half of 2023 (sans AMG variants for now), the slope-backed version is still to be unveiled and is not anticipated to touch down until the second half of next year.
