SPY PICS: Next Audi A7 the same, but different

There's little chance you'll mistake the next-generation Audi A7 for anything other than an Audi A7.

These most recent spy snaps show the new car will not be a radical styling departure from the current four-door "coupe" in size or proportions, even though it will be based on the new MLB Evo platform already in use on the Audi Q7 and due to also be employed on the next generation A8 limo.

Under the direction of Audi design boss Marc Lichte, the new A7 will be a stylistically refined development of the current car; A little sleeker, a little bolder (evident from the sharper, more angular grille on the test mule) and possibly a little more low-slung in the turret, with a deeper rear window.

There's little doubt it will show connections with the Lichte-influenced Audi prologue concept coupe unveiled in 2014 at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

The next-gen A7 could also adopt a more horizontal, Benz CLS-style side window profile to contrast with the subtle wedge shape of the current model. Naturally the interior will be all-new and it's being said an extended range of new technologies will be available.

An updated range of petrol and diesel engines is expected to focus on more efficiency, helped along by the lighter, tighter platform.

With a European launch – along with an all-new A6 model – expected in 2017, and the US in line for an introduction later in the same year, Australia looks likely to be a recipient of the new A7 some time early in 2018.
