SPY PICS: Next-gen Audi Q7

Audi's second-generation full-size SUV will ride on new MLB architecture and shed more than 300kg
The Automedia lensmen have been at it again, this time capturing the all-new successor to the existing Audi Q7, which is now more than seven years old.
The prototype in the accompanying images is festooned with a psychedelic disguise, but it’s still possible to make out the general profile and proportions of the vehicle.
Although it appears largely evolutionary, expect the next-gen Q7 to incorporate design language that brings it in line with the likes of the latest A8 flagship sedan.
Beneath the large wagon body is the Volkswagen Group’s third-generation SUV platform, which is derived from the car-based MLB architecture. This hardware is also expected to underpin the Bentley SUV due in 2016, as well as the next-gen VW Touareg, Porsche Cayenne and proposed Lamborghini SUV.
It’s believed the new platform will enable Audi engineers to pare at least 300kg from the hefty girth of the existing Q7, of which even the lightest variant tips the scales at over 2.4 tonnes.
Part of the weight savings in the new vehicle will come from optimised design, plus the extensive use of aluminium and composite materials.
The engine line-up will include 3.0-litre and 4.0-litre TFSI units and a 3.0-litre TDI. These will be supplemented by possibly two plug-in hybrid models – one incorporating the 3.0-litre TFSI mill and the other the 3.0-litre TDI – each offering all-electric range of about 30km.
As a result of the Q7’s hefty diet, the vehicle may even be offered with 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. There could also be a high-performance Q7 RS or SQ7 model in the pipeline, but that remains unconfirmed at this stage.
Also in the pipeline is a BMW X6-esque Q8, which will be derived from the Q7 but distinguished by a coupe-like profile. The proposed Q8 apparently drew a favourable response at customer clinics and Audi is reportedly targeting an annual production volume of 25,000 units.
