Mercedes-Benz is well along the path towards introducing its 2012 GL model and these Carparazzi spy photos show it will pick up some styling cues from sedan Benz models including the current E-Class.
The heavily-clad off-road meister was snapped undergoing tow tests in arid conditions in the USA, where it is built.
Interpretive peeling away of the disguise cladding indicates a more rounded look will appear at the front, with the theme being set by new headlight shapes, along with revised bumpers. The LED daytime running lights incorporated in the headlights look a little too clumsy to be real and could be a decoy taking attention from the little row of holes in the bumper itself, not unlike the current model.
Although the back end of the test mule is far too disguised to allow much speculation about what may happen there, Carparazzi reckons there are indications compact light clusters could replace the current hefty-looking units.
Like the current GL Benz, the next model will be based on a stretched version of the smaller ML series. It is expected to offer a drivetrain lineup reflecting today’s offerings that, in Australia, include a turbodiesel V6 as well as turbodiesel and petrol V8s.
The massive Benz offroader is built in the company’s plant in Alabama, which was damaged by a massive tornado earlier in the year.
In Australia the GL represents only a small percentage of Benz SUV sales, where the ML class currently outsells it at a rate of around six to one.
