SPY PICS: Next-generation Audi Q7

With a massive weight reduction and slimmed-down looks, the first all-new Audi Q7 since the model was introduced in 2006 is rumoured to be aiming for a launch on European and North American markets later this year.

Based on Audi’s (as well as Volkswagen’s, and Porsche’s) car-based MLB architecture, the next Q7 is expected to arrive with significant weight reductions approaching 400kg.

Although the proportions evident in the Automedia spy photos shot at the Nurburgring appear to show shorter front and rear overhangs, wider shoulders and a squared-off style with a more angular grille and a generally tougher stance, the Q7 looks set to present a lighter, more lithe appearance than the current, LandCruiser-size Q7.

The seven-seat Q7 is expected – like practically every other new-generation SUV – to lean towards cushier, tarmac-friendly dynamics with a wide range of electronic systems contributing to sedan-style comfort and safety. Large-diameter multi-spoke alloy wheels with low-profile tyres spotted on the test mules suggest Porsche Cayenne/BMW X5 aspirations in terms of on-road abilities.

Powerplant choices should mirror those available in the current Audi range, including the 245kW supercharged petrol 3.0-litre V6 as well as the 176kW 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel. The twin-turbo 4.0-litre petrol V8 used across the Volkswagen group (including Bentley) could also make an appearance.

Transmission is expected to comprise a conventional eight-speed auto, while quattro all-wheel drive will be standard.

It is also being touted that Audi will offer the next Q7 with two plug-in hybrid versions: One a diesel and the other petrol-fuelled.

Conceptual connections with the upcoming Audi Q7 are sure to be found in the Crosslane concept revealed at the 2013 Paris motor show.
