SPY PICS: Nippy looking new Toyota C-HR laps the Nürburgring

Toyota’s all-new compact SUV soaks up some track time at the most infamous circuit of them all

The second-generation Toyota C-HR has been spotted testing on the Nürburgring – yes, the Green Hell – wearing a more reaving camouflage wrap that gives us a better look at what the all-new compact SUV will look like come 2024.

Anyone who read our Toyota Prologue concept coverage will be able to spot immediately that this pre-production C-HR looks almost identical to the concept beyond the inclusion of physical door mirrors and slightly more pronounced rear styling elements.

Even the double-bubble roof spoiler has been carried across on this particular prototype – not something seen previously – which could well be the next GR Sport or equivalent going by the aggressive large-diameter alloys, black grille mesh and chunky little body kit.

Integrated door-handles are also a standout feature despite this not being a dedicated battery-electric model – Toyota Australia has already confirmed the new C-HR will be hybrid-only when it arrives here in the first half of next year, however, a EV version has long been anticipated.

It’s clear the new model will retain its predecessor’s funky character in terms of the exterior styling while looking decidedly different to the current version, but we can’t help be reminded of the eighth-generation Honda Civic hatch when we look at the rear of this development vehicle.

There’s been no word yet on exactly what will power the new C-HR, only that hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains will be offered globally. The current C-HR is available with the choice of either 85kW 1.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol or 90kW 1.8-litre four-cylinder hybrid powertrains.

More details will be revealed when the new model debuts later this year.
