Fresh spy shots of an undisguised Porsche 911 Safari prototype have surfaced, with the high-riding sports car caught testing on German public roads.
Our spy photographers say they captured the shots close to the famed Nurburgring race circuit, indicating the 911 on stilts will retain some of the iconic Porsche coupe’s on-road prowess as well as being more capable off-road.
Caught wearing zero camouflage and boasting widened wheel-arches, this test mule is tipped to be a Porsche 911 in all-wheel drive Carrera 4S guise.
Porsche itself is yet to reveal any production plans involving the high-riding 911 we see here, however, some reports suggest the new variant will be introduced as part of a refreshed line-up 911 that could also include an electrified powertrain for the first time, in a classic ‘top-down’ approach starting with the plug-in 911 Turbo S E-Hybrid.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the Safari derivative will come with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, but there’s a chance given the test mule’s Turbo S hybrid-style active aero rear spoiler and dual exhaust outlets.
Flush-mounted door-handles also feature, alongside huge black wheels wrapped around big brakes. And while the Safari isn’t a proper off-roader per say, the 911 shot here rides on grippy road-going Pirelli P Zero rubber.
Little more is known about the potential for a revived Porsche 911 Safari -- if that's what it ends up being called -- at this point. However, don't hold your breath for the production version to be revealed before late 2022 and the original Safari 959 of the late 1980s was never offered in Australia, so it remains to be seen whether we’ll ever see the new-generation 911 Safari on roads and trails Down Under.
