SPY PICS: Porsche Boxster GTS

Porsche’s hottest boxer four-cylinder engine is expected to debut in the next-gen Boxster/Cayman GTS

Porsche is expected to introduce the long-awaited GTS version of its latest 718 Boxster, alongside a similarly-specified Cayman GTS, during 2018.

The powerplant is touted to be a more powerful version of the 257kW/420Nm 2.5-litre four-cylinder B4 engine currently doing duty in the Boxster and Cayman S. Pundits suggest output will lift to at least 280kW.

However, the extra grunt won’t be the result of either increased capacity or an additional turbocharger as Porsche has indicated neither pathway to more power is straightforward within the mid-engine format.

Judging from these spy photos of an undisguised car on a race circuit, it appears visual changes to identify the GTS models will be minimal – seemingly limited to a small aero lip and larger air intakes in the front spoiler area.

Pundits are unanimous the GTS will score the pick of 718 model suspension options, including Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). The Sport Chrono package, with launch control and three selectable drive modes, will also likely be standard. Expect the choice of a seven-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox.

In whatever form, the Boxster/Cayman GTS will undoubtedly be even quicker than the current Boxster S (zero to 100km/h in 4.4sec), or the Cayman S which performed so strongly in this year’s Australia’s Best Driver’s Car shootout.

With the 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine at its capacity limit, it’s possible Porsche will reintroduce atmo six-cylinder power into the Boxster/Cayman when it unleashes new GT4 versions a little further down the track.
