SPY PICS: Toyota Tundra cabin laid bare

Toyota’s big new – and potentially Australia-bound – pick-up will have a different dash layout to LandCruiser 300 Series

As the official launch of the 2022 Toyota Tundra edges closer, new spy photographs are helping paint a clearer picture of what to expect when the new full-size pick-up is fully revealed in the northern hemisphere autumn, so by November.

Toyota has already revealed a single exterior shot of the top-spec TRD Pro variant, which will feature a super-wide central touch-screen and now these Automedia spy pics show the entry-level Tundra cabin will come with a much smaller touch-screen and analogue instrument dials.

By modern standards, the screen is relatively small, and is surrounded by large air-vents that dovetail into the touch-screen.

Below this are a range of climate controls and a USB port and while it’s a basic model with few gee-whiz features in evidence, it presents a more modern look than the current Tundra, which dates back to 2014.

There are also exterior spy pics of the Tundra model(s) in question, showing a pair of prototype utes cruising around in the USA.

What’s also evident is how different the new Tundra’s cabin looks to the upcoming Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series, despite both models sharing the same TNGA-F ladder-frame platform.

The Tundra will also adopt the new LandCruiser’s 10-speed automatic transmission and potentially one – or both – of its turbocharged V6 engines, plus its upgraded four-wheel drive system.

The Japanese auto giant has teased the 2022 Tundra’s ‘iForce MAX’ engine, which could be similar to the LandCruiser’s 3.5-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 (305kW/650Nm).

The new Toyota Tundra’s huge power-operated glass roof has also been officially teased, but there’s still a lot of mystery surrounding the new Ford F-150 and RAM 1500 competitor, which will be manufactured at Toyota’s San Antonio plant in Texas following a half-billion dollar upgrade to the facility.

While it’s still unclear whether Toyota’s biggest ute will become a global model built in left- and right-hand-drive for the first time, Toyota Australia has made no secret its of desire to bring the Tundra Down Under.

Local Toyota executives have repeatedly said they’re aware Aussie customers are crying out for a vehicle that can tow more than 3500kg – the limit of the HiLux ute and LandCruiser 200 and 300 Series – and remain keen to establish a business case for RHD production.

Full-size US pick-up trucks like the RAM 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado are ‘re-manufactured’ in Australia, but a factory-built RHD Toyota Tundra would be significantly cheaper and could significantly undermine demand for its locally converted rivals.
