Volkswagen's new generation Golf has been thoroughly scrutinised and analysed by the international media, but the wagon version has been mostly a deep, dark secret – until now. The Golf wagon, which is to be known in its home market as the Golf Variant (VW-speak for wagon, or 'estate' if you're British), is due for international launch during the first half of this year, but won't reach Australia before next year. Volkswagen Australia couldn't be any more specific than 2014 for a local launch date, but given the hatch models are scheduled for local launch next month – just six months after the international launch, we tip the wagon should be arriving here quite early in the year. The pictures you see here are a mix of spy photos showing pre-production vehicles being tested, courtesy of our friends at Carparazzi, and official images of the production model that were leaked by a Russian website. Those leaked images support the consensus at Carparazzi that the vehicle shot by them has fake tail lights fitted that owe more to the current Golf 6 than the finished product for Golf 7.
According to the spy photographers, the wagons – irrespective of the engine specified – will feature auto-stop/start and regenerative braking as standard. Transmissions offered will comprise five or six-speed manuals and six or seven-speed DSG boxes.
The provenance of the leaked pics remains undetermined, but with the car itself due for its first public unveiling at this week's Geneva motor show, it's reasonable to presume the images show the production car in its final form.
