It was officially unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show last week, covered in a psychedelic wrap and sitting in a glass cube.
Now, spy photographers in Europe have spotted what’s set to be Volkswagen’s first electric vehicle to launch Down Under.
The ID.4, which is slated for global production next year with a local launch penned for 2022, will enter the Aussie market first followed by the smaller ID.3 electric hatchback that will follow later that year.
Spied testing in the Austrian Alps this week, the ID.4 can be seen in typical camouflage, sitting relatively low to the ground with a rather wagon-esque profile.
Based on the ID Crozz concept car that was unveiled in 2017, the ID.4 will sit on the same MEB modular platform that will underpin other electric models, including the ID.3 hatch and a range of other models from VW and its subsidiaries.
Two body options are on the table – a coupe-style SUV and the more conventional SUV model as seen here with its boxy shape.
The ID.4 appears to steer away from the classic enclosed wheel covers worn by most zero-emission examples, as well as the black shoes it wore in previous spy pics, opting for an ordinary, yet futuristic design.
While no official specs have been revealed, carsales understands the ID.4 will come with 45, 58 and 77kWh lithium-ion battery packs that provide a range of 330km, 420km and 550km respectively.
