Hyundai has unexpectedly heralded its new three-door i30 variant with a special edition model priced just below $20,000.
Such value-added models are usually introduced to keep interest alive in an aging design, or to clear stock ahead of a new model release. But the importer is pulling out all stops to promote the new variant, which is situated at the new entry-level price point in the i30 range.
At $19,990 for the six-speed manual version, or $22,190 with a six-speed automatic, the Czech-built i30 slots in just below the five-door models that continue to be sourced from South Korea.
It's a car that opens the way for Hyundai to recontest market leadership in the small-car segment – provided buyers either don't need the rear doors or prefer the looks of the new variant.
Powered by a smaller, direct-injected engine (1.6 versus 1.8-litre), the three-door model develops 98kW and 163Nm, for fuel consumption figures of 6.3L/100km (manual) or 6.9L/100km (auto).
Minor styling details set the three-door i30 apart from the five-doors. Rear parking sensors are standard, as are the 16-inch twin-spoke design alloy wheels. The cabin is trimmed in black fabric. and the car's luggage capacity measures 378 litres with the rear seats upright. Colours available are: Creamy White (solid), Cool Red (solid), Sleek Silver (metallic), Aqua Blue (metallic), and Phantom Black (mica).
