The price of admission to the new SsangYong Korando has fallen to below $30,000 for the first time, but still includes manual and automatic transmissions, a host of standard safety equipment and a seven-year warranty with roadside assist.
Priced from just $26,990 drive-away, undercutting the most popular mid-size SUVs by about $5000, the entry-level SsangYong Korando EX manual brings a 120kW/280Nm 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine to the range for the first time.
Launched in September with a single turbo-diesel engine in ELX and Ultimate limited-edition (LE) forms priced from $32,990 drive-away, the new Korando is the first SsangYong model to be awarded a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating.
The 2020 SsangYong Korando range now consists of six full-time variants – EX, ELX and Ultimate – with the option of petrol power for each and the 100kW/324Nm 1.6-litre turbo-diesel reserved for ELX and Ultimate.
The only six-speed manual offering is the EX and the remainder of the range comes standard with a six-speed automatic transmission, which adds $2000 to the entry EX model ($28,990 drive-away).
Even entry-level EX models get tech usually reserved for more expensive SUVs, like autonomous emergency braking (AEB), front collision warning, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, auto high-beam, driver attention alert, reversing camera, 8.0-inch infotainment touch-screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 17-inch alloy wheels, auto wipers and heated/folding mirrors.
Priced from $30,990, mid-spec ELX models add more equipment including LED daytime running lights, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert with brake assist, front/rear parking sensors, lane change assist, exit assist function, push-button start and larger 18-inch alloys.
Flagship Ultimate variants get even more equipment – 19-inch diamond-cut alloys, adaptive cruise control, sunroof, electric tailgate, dual-zone climate control, leather-appointed seats, larger 10.25-inch infotainment unit, tyre pressure monitoring, heated seats all round (plus cooling for the front two) and rear privacy glass.
SsangYong says the new full-time Korando model range will be available in Aussie dealerships from early next year, with limited stocks of ELX and Ultimate LE diesels currently available.
