Subaru Australia has announced changes to its BRZ sports car range, including the introduction of a range-topping ‘tS’ variant.
Priced from $33,990 (plus on-road costs) in base-model manual form for 2018, the BRZ range scores a new infotainment system incorporating Subaru’s third-generation software and 7.0-inch screen, bringing the two-door up to speed with in-built satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
At the opposite end of the spectrum sits the new tS variant, priced at $39,894 (plus ORCs).
Distinguishing the sportier model is stiffer Sachs suspension, Brembo brakes, STI coil springs, a thicker under-bonnet strut bracing for added rigidity, 18-inch alloy wheels, roof-mounted antenna and requisite badging. Subaru says the tS’ front bumper is unique.
Inside, the flagship sports red-themed highlights, partial Alcantara seat trim, a unique STI steering wheel and STI push-button starter.
Subaru’s updates mirror those made to the BRZ’s under the skin twin, Toyota’s 86, announced last week.
Both models are offered with an unchanged 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol producing 152kW/212Nm. It is available in both six-speed manual or six-speed automatic forms.
Originally, it was hoped the hotter BRZ would stay true to the wild turbocharged 225kW/450Nm BRZ STI concept Subaru was caught patenting last year. Maybe there are future plans for that car.
