Subaru Australia has released the WRX RS40 – the last in a series of limited-edition versions of the existing WRX before its all-new successor emerges at the Tokyo or Los Angeles motor shows in November. Priced at $44,490 plus on-road costs -- making it $3500 more than the entry-level WRX ($39,990) and $500 more than the WRX Premium ($43,990) -- Subaru says the RS40 adds more than $7000 worth of equipment.
Just 300 examples will be available from late August, all painted in signature WR Blue Mica paint and all featuring Recaro seats with blue Alcantara inserts, an STI rear spoiler, STI front lip spoiler, STI short-shift gear assembly, STI flexible tower strut brace, gold 17-inch WRX alloy wheels, exclusive RS40 decals and a numbered RS40 interior badge.
Subaru Australia says the RS40 celebrates its 40th anniversary year and 20 years since the original all-wheel drive turbo ‘Rex’ went on sale in Japan, during which time it won six World Rally Championship and 10 consecutive Australian Rally Championships.
“This feature-packed special-edition makes a direct visual link to the original World Rally Blue WRXs that did so much to grow Subaru’s performance credentials globally,” said Subaru Australia Managing Director, Nick Senior.
“WR Blue remains a customer favourite colour in the WRX palette, so it’s entirely fitting that this last-in-line special-edition of the current car carries the famous blue and gold combination.
“WRX has always been a winner for customers in the retained value stakes and the special editions in particular give it even more cachet, so with only 300 of these available, we anticipate high demand.”
Subaru revealed a concept version of its next-generation WRX, which will be based on the latest Impreza platform, but for the first time features all-new bodywork, at the New York motor show in March.
