Subaru boxers on with 2.5 turbo

Subaru resumes production of problem engine and attends to potentially affected Australian customers

Subaru Australia is back into full swing with deliveries of 2.5-litre turbo models following a technical issue that arose early April.

The problem centred around a "knocking" noise in the engine, which according to Subaru had the potential to cause "damage to the engines of potentially affected vehicles" (more here).

In a statement issued on April 28 Subaru Australia says: "The Subaru Technical Department has introduced a diagnostic test produced by the factory to identify cars with symptoms and the procedure started rollout nationwide last week."

According to Subaru Australia, priority is being given to vehicles already with customers and customer vehicles awaiting delivery. The company will need to contact nearly 180 customers this week.

"Their cars are being booked into dealerships for a precautionary check, at Subaru Australia's expense," the release states.

"Any customers whose vehicle produces engine knocking noise will be offered a loan car until their vehicles can be checked and, where necessary, fixed."

Production of the 2.5-litre turbo engines has resumed at Subaru in Japan. The company stresses in its statement that no safety related recall was instigated as a result of the engine problem.
