Subaru has launched a more refined and more advanced Forester XT, priced from $43,490.
Available in two levels of trim, but with just the one drivetrain offering, the new model is $1500 dearer than its counterpart in the previous range, and $3000 costlier than the superseded model in the Premium grade. Indeed, the new Forester XT Premium ($50,490) falls just $500 short of the previous model S-Edition variant.
But the new car can justify the price increases, with such enhancements as direct-injection for its Euro 5-compliant turbocharged 2.0-litre horizontally-opposed engine, and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) as standard. These, combined with aerodynamic efficiency gains – an 11 per cent improvement to 0.33Cd – have lifted the Forester XT's fuel efficiency by 19 per cent and have reduced emissions by 20.6 per cent. Towing capacity and outright power and torque are also improved from the figures posted by the previous Forester XT.
For those dreading the introduction of CVT as standard, Subaru has also packaged the car with shift paddles. Given the car's performance potential (177kW and 350Nm versus 169kW and 320Nm for the previous model), the new Forester XT should provide plenty of kick in a straight line, CVT or not.
The Forester XT, which has already secured a five-star ANCAP rating, comes equipped as standard with X-Mode all-wheel drive system, reversing camera, electric sunroof, dual-zone climate control, multi-function display, SI-Drive and 18-inch alloys. Features added for the Premium level of trim include: EyeSight driver assistance system, eight-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, start button, rain-sensing wipers/auto-on/off headlights, leather upholstery, heated front seats and automatic tailgate.
At its core, the Forester XT is stronger than before – with an aluminium bonnet to lower body weight – and the new model rides on a unique suspension calibration and features upgraded brakes.
The new model is just 35mm longer, with a corresponding increase in wheelbase of 25mm. Subaru's designers have shifted the A pillars forward and lowered the roof section at the rear, while the door sills have been shifted inboard 30mm, with extended lower sections of the doors sealed against dirt by an added strip. Door mirrors have been updated and relocated from the A pillars to the door skins.
Exterior colours for the new model range are: Crystal black silica, Dark gray metallic, Deep cherry pearl, Ice silver metallic, Jasmine green metallic, Marine blue pearl, Satin white pearl and Venetian red pearl.
"This is a game changer," said Subaru Australia MD, Nick Senior, as quoted in a press release. "The Sports Utility Vehicle market is booming and just like the passenger car market before it, there is interest in a sporty model – a halo vehicle in effect.
"The XT is that sporty alternative, but not at the expense of creature comforts, ride and refinement. Comfortably quick is its catchphrase. It is turbine smooth, surprisingly nimble and pampers the driver and passengers. It blends the best of both in a package for its time."
"Forester 2.0 XT is the ultimate fun package for those that like turbocharged performance in their SUV."
The Forester XT goes on sale with the rest of the new Forester range, from February 1. Subaru has also announced prices for the naturally-aspirated models ahead of their on-sale date.
