Subaru issues teaser image of all-new STi

Its world debut is nearly a month away, but Subaru is whetting appetites with a shadowy image of its new turbo AWD STi hotshoe

Subaru provided the first clues to how its next-generation Impreza WRX STi would shape up via the WRC Concept car revealed at the recent Frankfurt show, and it's now followed up by releasing this teaser shot of the production car.

Due to make its world debut at the Tokyo motor show on October 24, the new-generation STi will line up against the eagerly anticipated Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X, which will be officially unveiled at the Tokyo show.

Both Subaru and Mitsubishi are playing their cards close to their chests regarding the technical specs of their candidates, but most industry watchers are pointing to a power output north of 220kW from the Subie's blown 2.5-litre flat-four.

Maximum torque is also expected to rise from the current STi's 392Nm to a figure around 420Nm.

The darkly lit image issued by Subaru doesn't give too much away, but it's still possible to make out the tarmac-scraping front spoiler and aggressively flared guards, which combine to give the car a much tougher stance than the somewhat insipid cooking model WRX.

Look carefully and you'll also be able to glean the outline of an XXL rear wing, in contrast to the WRX's subtle lip spoiler.

Although not visible from this image, the STi will also gain a much more purposeful wheel/tyre package than the 17-inch rims and 205/50 R17 rubber worn by the standard WRX.

Well-placed sources suggest the new-age STi will offer better ride quality than its predecessor and its refinement levels and dynamics should benefit from the much stiffer platform (vis-à-vis its forbear) offered by the donor car.

Also expect the STi's sophisticated traction/chassis control electronics to evolve to a higher plane than those of the outgoing model.

Result? In all likelihood, tarmac-devouring capabilities that should verge on supercar levels, setting up what should be a scintillating rivalry with the Lancer Evo X.

We'll know more in around four weeks when the Tokyo show rolls around, but the acid test will come when we actually get our paws on the car.
