Pre-empting the launch of the revamped model year 2013 Liberty range later in the year, Subaru has whipped the covers off a new high-riding version of its medium sedan, the 2013 Liberty X. The jacked-up sedan range comprises two models, the six-cylinder 3.6X and the four-cylinder 2.5X, with the former the most expensive sedan in the range priced at $55,990.
Subaru's all-wheel drive Liberty X models are distinguished from garden variety Libs by an additional 50mm of ground clearance, giving them a more adventurous stance.
The entry-level Liberty 2.5X is priced at $44,490 and is powered by Subaru's 2.5-litre four-cylinder boxer engine, outputting 123kW/229Nm. This power and torque channelled through a continuously variable automatic transmission.
The top-spec Liberty 3.6X gets the beefy 3.6-litre six-cylinder engine worth 191kW/350Nm, and is equipped as standard with a conventional five-speed automatic gearbox.
The sedan-only Liberty X models feature Subaru's EyeSight driver assist system as standard. The EyeSight safety suite performs multiple functions, such as automatic braking in the event of a collision, speed adjusting cruise control and lane departure warnings.
Subaru has also added updated the grille and front bumper designs that will be seen in all MY13 models. New side skirts and 18-inch alloy wheels are also in evidence and 3.6X models benefit from a bit more bling. The updates include chrome door handles, chrome accents on the boot and a 'high lustre gunmetal' finish on the alloy wheels.
Other standard features on the 2013 Liberty X range include reverse camera, leather trim, sunroof, satellite navigation, smart key with push button start, a McIntosh stereo system, heated front seats, wiper de-icers, Bluetooth connectivity and HID headlights.
Interior changes to the MY13 Liberty X models comprise repositioned electronic park brake and SI-Drive switches, along with brushed gun-metal grey centre panels, centre console and steering switch panels.
Subaru Australia Managing Director, Nick Senior, said the new Liberty X models increase the scope of the medium car, which now have a ride height of 200mm compared to the previous 150mm.
"This makes it ideal for rural and regional areas, but also for those who need extra clearance in negotiating driveways."
Mr Senior reckons some SUV buyers will take a liking to the jacked-up sedans as well.
"The ease of entry and exit of our SUVs has always been a key selling point and we have now been able to incorporate this into a sedan, for those who prefer that body style."
