Subaru has announced a production model to follow-up the bright green XV Concept brought to Melbourne last month for the Australian International Motor Show.
The 'real' XV (pictured here in sketch form) will make its public debut in Frankfurt next month and will be built to European specification. Originally introduced as a concept earlier this year at the Shanghai motor show, the XV is not yet confirmed for the Australian market, Subaru advises. However, the prospects are looking positive, since the XV is basically the next-generation Impreza with added ride height and some other offroad cues.
Certainly local Subaru MD Nick Senior was full of enthusiasm for car coming to Australia when he spoke with the media in Melbourne a month ago. If there's one stumbling block, it's the opportunity for the XV to snaffle sales from the slightly larger Forester model. But according to Subaru's local PR team, the concept car drew a lot of interest from the public during its showing at AIMS, suggesting there's a market for a car such as the XV in Subaru's local range.
There is a precedent too, as the current Impreza range has spawned an XV variant along similar lines to the new car. So Subaru has already dipped that toe in the water and presumably has the sales data to support a decision for or against bringing the new model to Australia.
The Euro-spec production model will be introduced at Frankfurt on September 13.
