Younger demographics are used to saving time by purchasing goods online, from shoes and jewellery to movies and video games. And now you can buy Subaru's most popular models online too.
We've toyed with the new "Build and Buy" functionality on the www.subaru.com.au website and it's a fairly seamless process. You simply pick one of the cars available for online purchase – currently the BRZ, WRX STI and Impreza models – and simply make the usual car configurator selections.
Users can choose a body type, colour and accessories – we couldn't go past the STI lip spoiler on the regular Impreza. The number of accessories available is significant and that it prices them for customers on the spot is a nice touch.
Once everything is hunky-dory, a total price figure is given and then things get serious.
After creating an account with Subaru, you then choose a Subaru Retailer where you want your car delivered. There's also a minimum deposit of $1000 which is payable via credit card.
Then you can review and approve the contract and add any special requests.
As well as saving you time and effort, the Build and Buy system lets you track the progress of your order at any time, to see when your vehicle will be delivered.
Subaru says the new online system provides "a seamless experience from choosing to buying".
The 'build' system works with all Subaru vehicles on the manufacturer's website and will calculate drive-away prices based on a users postcode, but only the Impreza, WRX STI and BRZ can be purchased at this stage.
Back in 2012 Subaru pioneered the online purchasing process with the BRZ coupe, a car that sold-out three hours after going "live".
"The online model provides an even bigger opportunity for us to reach a new tech savvy audience," said Subaru Australia managing director, Colin Christie.
"The experience of buying online must be something we offer to our customers as we evolve around the digital world. Build and Buy online ensures we stay ahead of the curve."
