Suzuki backs Surfing Queensland
Japanese brand wants to do its part to support and promote surfing at all levelsSuzuki Auto Co, the importer of Suzuki vehicles in Queensland and Northern NSW, has partnered with Surfing Queensland to help promote board riding as a sport, career and active lifestyle.
The new partnership focuses on the supply of staff and event vehicles to Surfing Queensland – specifically the Jimny, Vitara and S-Cross – which will be used by coaches, event co-ordinators, judges and officials.
Neither the cost or duration of the sponsorship have been announced, but Suzuki Auto Co says the sport is a key part of the Sunshine State’s identity and needs to be supported.
“Surfing is the most quintessential Queensland lifestyle sport and we’ve got a great role to play in driving its further success,” said marketing manager Jake Tobin.
“Suzuki is keen to support the aspirations of those who want to reach the peak level of their sports as well as those who want to adopt a more kick-back approach.
“Surfing Queensland has been around since 1964 and as the recognised administrative body for the sport, is a perfect fit for the fun, camaraderie, and value delivered by Suzuki cars on and off the sand.”
Stand-up paddle boarding is also included under the Surfing Queensland umbrella, since it gives those living inland and in the state’s far north the chance to experience board riding where there are no surf breaks like those on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.
In fact, while board riding is Surfing Queensland’s focus in the south-east of the state, stand-up paddleboard riding is the fastest-growing sport in the southern hemisphere.
Supporting surfing in populated and regional areas of the state, Surfing Queensland is structured around coaching, judging, events and creating qualification pathways to state, national and international events.
Every year, Surfing Queensland’s learn-to-surf schools teach the sport’s skills to more than 80,000 students.
Encouraging more people to enjoy surfing and creating special programs for youngsters and females is a core part of its strategy across its 45 member clubs throughout Queensland.
Australian beaches have been the training and victory grounds for surfing world champions including Stephanie Gilmore (2007-2010, 2012, 2014, 2018 and 2022), Mick Fanning (2007, 2009 and 2013), Joel Parkinson (2012), Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew (1978), Peter Townend (1976) and Phyllis O’Donnell (1964).
