Suzuki Australia has confirmed it will introduce a hybrid version of its Vitara small SUV in the first quarter of next year.
Known fittingly as the 2026 Suzuki Vitara Hybrid, the compact high-rider will eventually cross swords with the Hyundai Kona Hybrid, Haval Jolion HEV and Toyota Corolla Cross and likely land here as part of a wider Vitara facelift (see pictures).
It’s unclear at this stage if Suzuki will offer the 1.4-litre mild hybrid locally – and call it a hybrid as per the Swift hatch – or the 1.5-litre full fat hybrid system that features a 24.6kW/60Nm e-motor and can actually move meaningful distances on electricity.
Both powertrains are offered in Europe, where the Vitara Hybrid is produced.
“Introducing a hybrid powertrain into our popular Vitara range is a major milestone,” Suzuki Australia boss Michael Pachota said.
“It shows our commitment to sustainable mobility and expands the options for customers seeking more environmentally friendly driving without sacrificing the performance or features they know and love.”
The current-generation Vitara is now approaching 10 years old and will have been treated to two facelifts by the time the hybrid version(s) arrive next year.
Odds are the hybrids will check-in as the dearest variants of the updated line-up, though we expect the petrol and turbo-petrol versions to be subject to a price bump of some description.
For reference, the current model opens from $29,990 plus on-road costs
