The facelifted 2024 Tesla Model 3 electric sedan revealed in September has seen numerous unofficial wagon designs emerge from independent graphic artists, offering an alternative to the Tesla Model Y SUV’s ungainly styling.
And this particular Tesla Model 3 Performance ‘GT’ iteration is one of the best we’ve seen.
Notwithstanding its incredibly strong sales in Australia and further abroad, the current Tesla Model Y has been criticised for its awkward aesthetics, especially since the facelifted ‘Project Highland’ Model 3 emerged.
Which is where a sleek wagon comes in…
Providing similarly abundant boot space to the larger Model Y only without a clumsy exterior design, a Tesla Model 3 mid-size wagon or shooting brake would hand the US electric car-maker a handy rival to the award-winning Kia EV6 as well a unique selling point in the EV world.
There’s every chance a sporty number like this one from the talented Sugar Design 1 could also provide clues as to the upcoming circa-$35,000 Tesla Model 2 hatchback design.
The novel Tesla Model 3 GT Performance edition wagon would likely be powered by the same ballistic powertrain heading for the expected Model 3 Ludicrous variant, which is set to deliver BMW M3-bashing performance with a circa-400kW power punch.
We also uncovered another render of a track-ready Tesla Model 3 Performance wagon from Rain Prisk that could whet the appetite of Audi RS 4 fans.
It’s unlikely Tesla will build a Model 3 station wagon any time soon, given the Tesla Model Y is now firmly entrenched as the world’s (and Australia’s) best-selling battery-electric SUV.
But Tesla is facing stiff competition from all angles, particularly as BYD pushes aggressively into international markets with attractively priced EVs.
As a result, the Elon Musk-led company will be looking closely at ways to cost effectively increase its portfolio.
The Telsa Model 3 starts from $61,900 plus on-road costs in Australia but a new rival, the BYD Seal mid-size electric sedan, has just launched in Australia priced from under $50,000 and topping out at just under $69,000 for the potent Seal Performance, a dual-motor, 390kW/670Nm AWD weapon.
The BYD Seal U SUV version is also undergoing testing in Australia, as our exclusive spy shots this week have revealed.
