Continued flooding in central and northern Thailand has impacted Honda’s vehicle, motorcycle and MPE production. Flood waters have limited access to the plant, while supply disruptions have forced a suspension of manufacturing.
The vehicle plant was closed from October 4 – 10 with the motorcycle and MPE facility closed for two days from October 6 - 8. Although operations have resumed at the motorcycle facility, vehicle and MPE production remains shuttered.
Honda says it will continue to monitor the situation and is exerting a “company-wide effort to normalise production as soon as possible”. The firm is confident its Australian motorcycle and MPE business will remain largely unaffected, but has apologised in advance for the impact on vehicle supply, saying it will clarify the scenario as more information comes to hand.
“We deeply regret any inconvenience experienced by our customers and ask for their understanding during these challenging times,” Honda Australia said in a statement. “Honda would like to express our deepest sympathy and condolences to the victims of the flood in central and northern Thailand, and our sincere hopes for the earliest possible relief and recovery of the affected areas.”
motoring.com.au has approached other Thai-sourced manufacturers for comment including Ford, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota.
Ford Australia public affairs director, Sinead Phipps, told motoring.com.au that although its situation is better than that faced by Honda, a two-day production halt has been in place.
"Our production facilities are located in an area of Rayong that has not been affected by the floods, so we are not facing the same situation that other manufacturers might be at this point," explained Phipps. "However, as some suppliers operating in Ayutthaya province have been affected, production at our AutoAlliance Thailand facility was suspended yesterday for 48 hours to make a full assessment of inventory and logistics continuity."
motoring.com.au will update this news article with any updates as they come to hand.
