The 2024 Toyota Camry has arrived Down Under priced from $39,990 plus on-road costs with three grades on offer: Ascent, Ascent Sport and SL.
That opening price tag predictably applies to the base model and increases to $42,990 for the mid-range Ascent Sport before topping out at $53,990 for the flagship, however every figure is more than $2000 up on the old version.
As reported in November, the new-generation Camry is only being produced in hybrid form with Australia in turn only getting the front-drive version as opposed to the nippier all-wheel drive offered overseas.
Even so, the new 2.5-litre four-cylinder hybrid system is good for 170kW and will return a combined fuel consumption of 4.0L/100km, however it demands a diet of 95RON.
CO2 emissions meantime are pegged at 91 grams per kilometre while the official 0-100km/h time is 7.2 seconds, with drive again harnessed by a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Every variant comes with a 50-litre fuel tank, three drive modes, 60:40 split-folding rear seat, adaptive cruise control, dual-zone climate control, Toyota Connected Services, sat-nav, keyless entry and start, smartphone mirroring and Toyota Safety Sense.
Homing in on the Ascent, headline equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, fabric upholstery, manual front seats, LED headlights, a urethane steering wheel, 7.0-inch driver’s display, an 8.0-inch infotainment screen, six-speaker sound system and a reversing camera.
Stepping up to the Ascent Sport adds higher-grade LED headlights, LED fog lights, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather-accented steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, bigger 12.3-inch infotainment screen and a wireless phone charger.
The SL meantime rides on 18-inch alloys and comes with leather upholstery, a panoramic roof, power-adjustable passenger seat, heated and cooled front seats, paddle shifters, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, digital rearview mirror, rain-sensing wipers, a head-up display and a nine-speaker JBL sound system among a few other trinkets.
ANCAP has just announced the new Camry achieved a five-star safety rating when tested against the latest protocols, setting a new record of 95 per cent for its adult occupant protection in the process.
The new model rides on the same platform as its predecessor – albeit updated – despite being marketed as a new-generation product, however it measures 35mm longer (4920mm) thanks to its all-new nose cone inspired by the bZ4X EV.
Boot space is rated at 524 litres and while hybrid sedans have never been well-regarded as tow vehicles, the maximum towing capacity is a measly 400kg.
Eight exterior colours are on offer across the range, comprising Glacier White, Frosted White, Silver Pearl, Liquid Mercury, Eclipse Black, Jasper Red, Precious Bronze and Saturn Blue.
