Volkswagen has confirmed that the Up! concept car unveiled in Frankfurt two years ago will go into production and it will be produced in three- and five-door form (more here and here).
The latest, we hear from Volkswagen's Product Communications spokesperson, Christian Haacke is that it will be produced in sedan form as well as other variants. Furthermore, unlike the smart range from Mercedes-Benz or MINI, the Up! will remain a model range rather than a distinct brand of its own.
"It will not be a sub-brand, but a sub-model. Of course, it will broaden the Volkswagen family," Haacke told journalists at the launch of the new Polo (more here).
"Since... the Polo has turned into such a grown-up product, we'll need something to extend the range at the bottom."
"You've probably heard of this working title: 'NSF'," said Haacke.
"It not only covers the aspect that we will have it in a wide variety of derivatives, like two-door, four-door and others -- but also with different brands of the Volkswagen Group and also on all five continents. We're aiming at a financially attractive presence for the consumers."
It leaves us wondering whether the Up! is the start of a new product grounding for Volkswagen and its subsidiaries. Given the spread across different brands (Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen all mentioned so far) and the diversity of the variants, is Volkswagen rebuilding its entire product portfolio from the ground Up!?
