The Volkswagen Kombi is the next vehicle to be given the LEGO treatment
We love any attempt to recreate a well-known vehicle into a life sized LEGO replica especially when it is for a world record attempt.The LEGO Volkswagen Kombi camper van was put together by two experienced LEGO model makers who used over 400,000 LEGO bricks in what is believed to be the world's biggest camper from LEGO.
Revealed at the f.re.e Leisure and Travel Fair in Germany, Rene Hoffmeister and fellow LEGO builder Pascal Lenhard had only six weeks to build this ambitious world record attempt which even includes a pop-up roof.
“Essentially, we would have needed a nine-day week,” recalls Hoffmeister. “However, as they don't exist, the only option was night shifts.”
The LEGO Kombi van is based off the iconic T2a built between 1967 and 1971. This version is over 5 metres long, close to 2 metres tall (or 3 metres with the roof popped up) and weighs 700 kg, and even has a working side sliding door and all the interior trimmings of the OG Kombi. We aren't too sure whether you'd want to spend a weekend away camping in this Kombi though, especially if you accidentally step on a rouge LEGO piece in the middle of the night.
The LEGO Kombi features twice as many pieces as the current world record holder, the LEGO 1973 Viscount van as well as the LEGO teardrop trailer which as unveiled back in 2015 and unlike LEGO Bugatti Chiron, it is not driveable.
